Two Tips for Security-Conscious Homeowners Who Plan to Undertake Garden Renovation Projects

Construction & Contractors Blog

If you are a security-conscious homeowner and want to give your garden area a makeover, you may find the advice below to be quite helpful.

Don't scrimp when purchasing the timber and paint for any new fences that you plan to build

If your garden area is in need of a new fence and you plan to have one specially built by your contractor, it is important not to scrimp when you buy the materials and the paint for this feature. If you want the end results of the garden renovations to not only make your property exterior look better but to also make it more secure, you must ensure that the fence that encloses the garden is made from the highest-quality materials and is coated in anti-vandal paint.

For example, if you provide your contractor who will be constructing the fence with top-quality fencing timber, the fence that they build with this material will be far better able to withstand any attempted break-ins. This is because high-end fencing timber is thicker and more robust than cheaper types of wood and, as such, is much more difficult to crack open or pull down.

If you then coat this timber with anti-vandal paint, it will be a lot harder for criminals to scale the fence (as this paint has an extremely slippery texture that prevents people from maintaining a strong grip or foothold on the surfaces that are coated in it).

Be careful about where you fit seating features

If your garden renovation project will include the installation of seating features, such as an anchored garden table and bench, then it is important to be careful about where you get the contractor to install these items.

If these features are fitted near the walls of your home, they could make your property less secure. For example, if a burglar gets into your garden, they could then use the garden table as a stepping stone, which would enable them to reach and climb in through one of the open windows on the upper floor of your house.

Similarly, if you install a trellis on an exterior wall, it could provide a burglar with the perfect climbing frame to use to gain entry to the upper floors of the building.

As such, it is best to get your contractor to install these features at least a few metres away from the exterior walls.

Colin's Construction Blog

Hello, my name is Colin and this is my construction blog. When people think of the construction industry, they often just imagine guys in hard hats building brick walls. While this is a popular image of the industry, it doesn't reflect the true diversity of different contractors and tradesmen who are involved in a construction project. Lasy year, my wife and I decided to construct our dream home. I had to arrange visits of plumbers, roofers, electricians, surveyors and home builders in order to get the job done. I learnt a lot during that experience, so I decided to start this blog.
