4 Reasons to Consider Fitting a Skylight in Your Kitchen

Construction & Contractors Blog

There are plenty of great things you can fit in your kitchen, but one thing you might not have thought about is a skylight. Here are four great reasons why your kitchen deserves one.

1. Makes the Room Feel Larger

Not everyone is blessed with a large kitchen. As most people need to both prepare and eat their meals in the kitchen, the space often feels smaller than they'd like it to be. While a skylight won't make the room larger, it will make a room feel larger. Skylights help illuminate shadows and provide an uninterrupted view from where you are right up to the sky above. That helps make a room feel larger, airier and more inviting.

2. Brings in Natural Light Above Key Areas

One of the more obvious benefits of installing a skylight in any room is bringing in more natural light, and it just so happens that this advantage is even greater in the kitchen. The kitchen is the sort of place where you need very strong visibility. Unfortunately, the natural light provided by your standard windows often gets blocked. When you need to use a work surface, for example, natural light might not come in exactly where it should. With a skylight, natural light will flood down from above to illuminate the area you're working in.

3. Keeps Things Ventilated

A kitchen is clearly going to need proper ventilation, more so than other rooms in the house. It's where you cook, so you'll produce everything from smoke to steam to odours to airborne grease. While range hoods can help get rid of all that, a skylight will also do its part. Choose one that can be opened remotely and you'll be able to bring in fresh air whenever your kitchen needs it. You'll keep the kitchen free of smells, smoke and steam, and you'll let out lots of heat after you've been cooking for some time.

4. Creates Focal Points

Skylights improve the style of a room as well as its functionality, going beyond bringing in more natural light. You can use a skylight to bring a taste of the outside view into your kitchen, and you can position one or more to create focal points. For example, if you have a small kitchen with a relatively large dining table, you can fit one right above the table to bring the room's layout together.

Colin's Construction Blog

Hello, my name is Colin and this is my construction blog. When people think of the construction industry, they often just imagine guys in hard hats building brick walls. While this is a popular image of the industry, it doesn't reflect the true diversity of different contractors and tradesmen who are involved in a construction project. Lasy year, my wife and I decided to construct our dream home. I had to arrange visits of plumbers, roofers, electricians, surveyors and home builders in order to get the job done. I learnt a lot during that experience, so I decided to start this blog.
