Fibreglass Insulation Installation: 5 Safety Tips to Remember

Construction & Contractors Blog

Fibreglass insulation is a popular type of insulation found in most homes. The key benefit is that fibreglass doesn't wear out or become inefficient over time, making it an energy-effective and affordable form of insulation for your house. Although it's fairly easy to use fibreglass for insulation, below are some important insulation installation tips you should keep in mind.

Breathing

You can easily suffer from respiratory complications when you inhale the extremely fine glass fibres. This can be exhibited by bronchitis, serious coughing, and irritation of the lungs and throat. If the case is severe, inhalation can cause lung disease. Therefore, it's essential to wear a dust mask or respirator – this reduces respiratory complication risks.

Skin protection

The tiny fibres of the insulation wool may cause irritation to the eyes and skin. If your contact with fibreglass is prolonged, inflammation of the skin will occur. It's recommended that you wear loose-fitting clothes during the installation. Long-legged and long-sleeved clothes are the best option since they will protect the skin from any kind of irritation. In case your skin comes into contact with the fibreglass particles, do not scratch or rub your skin. Simply wash the area with warm water and mild soap.

Ventilation

Another vital measure you must keep in mind during the fibreglass installation is excellent ventilation. Consider getting a special filtration system so it can run as you work. This will reduce the occurrence of the material in the air and prevent body irritation or inhalation.

Food consumption

You should avoid taking food or drinks when installing fibreglass insulation, and the same applies to anyone who smokes. There is a chance that the drink, food or cigarette could channel the harmful fibreglass materials into the body. To be safe, consider taking food and drinks or any other kind of refreshment before you start the job.

Head and eyes

During the installation, you may need to install fibre in areas that are over your head. Make sure you get some kind of head cover for all overhead installations. The headcover will help keep the head and eyes protected from contact with fibreglass. Also, wear safety glasses to keep your eyes protected from injury from the fine fibreglass substances. Glasses that come with side shields will offer maximum protection.

Once you finish insulating, be sure to clean the clothes you used separately. This helps prevent contamination of other clothes.

Colin's Construction Blog

Hello, my name is Colin and this is my construction blog. When people think of the construction industry, they often just imagine guys in hard hats building brick walls. While this is a popular image of the industry, it doesn't reflect the true diversity of different contractors and tradesmen who are involved in a construction project. Lasy year, my wife and I decided to construct our dream home. I had to arrange visits of plumbers, roofers, electricians, surveyors and home builders in order to get the job done. I learnt a lot during that experience, so I decided to start this blog.
